This Player’s Era tournament format is dumb. The most likely outcome going into the final day was four unbeaten teams. That means the 3rd place team is going to have a better record in the tourney and make less money than the runner-up. Dumb.
On top of that, this tournament (they don’t even call it a tournament officially, it’s a “festival”) sets a pretty dangerous precedent. Is it really far-fetched to imagine a future where the power conferences—or even just the SEC and Big 10—eschew a bloated 76-team NCAA tournament to send their players to something like this, with the promise of big money going directly to the players and schools rather than the broadcast networks and governing body? “But it wouldn’t have the prestige of March Madness.” Remember, the NIT used to be more prestigious than the NCAA tournament. “But they’ll never make more money than March Madness.” Possibly, but go look at the growing Saudi investment in American sports and get back to me.
And even if the worst-case scenario of this tournament or a similar one overtaking March Madness never happens, consider how even more volatile the transfer portal will be when players are trying to get onto team playing in a “festival” like this just to get their potential cut of a bonus million. The whole thing feels like a very bad, dangerous direction for college sports to be flirting with.
