College Football Picks, Week 5
Consensus Picks
Games with multiple members of the panel picking the same team, with no opposition (number of pickers in brackets).
Oklahoma -2.5 [8] at Auburn: Apparently the Sooners left a nice impression on the CFAJ crew, as Oklahoma laying 2.5 at Jordan-Hare is the most unanimous of the unanimous picks this week. Other games with a clean sweep:
Illinois +17.5 [5] at Penn State
BYU +2.5 [4] at Baylor
USC -13.5 [4] vs. Wisconsin
Texas -38.5 [4] vs. Mississippi State
LSU -20.5 [4] vs. South Alabama
Oregon -24.5 [4] at UCLA
Michigan -9.5 [3] vs. Minnesota
Iowa State -12.5 [3] at Houston
Ohio State -25.5 [3] at Michigan State
80% Club
Games with nearly unanimous support, but one contrarian pick.
Ole Miss -17.5 [7] vs. Kentucky [1]: Rod Johnson is the lone UK picker because “I don’t trust Ole Miss yet, and I’m thinking Kensucky is a little salty.”
Miami -16.5 [7] vs. Virginia Tech [1]
Split Decisions
Games with multiple pickers, but some dissention on the right team. [Number of pickers for each team in brackets.]
Georgia -2.5 [5] at Alabama [3]: Frosty Yonkers picked the Tide: “Bama and UGA both have great defensive fronts, but Bama has more explosive ability which will be needed in this game to hit a big play.” Harold Richard agrees: “only Bama’s offense looked like it could score against a good D. Bama isn’t UK.”
Conversely, Rod Johnson believes “the magic is gone with Bama. UGA will roll them.” And Cox Bigly thinks “Beck is the better QB and the Tide secondary is their weakness on defense. It’ll be a good game but I like the Dawgs offense vs. the Tide defense, and more so the UGA defense vs. the Bama O.” And JML, Esquire believes that “until DeBoer proves he can outsmart Kirby, I’ll go with the nation’s #1 pass defense to squeeze out a win.”
UCF -14.5 [3] vs. Colorado [2]: Lucky Day picks the Knights because “I hate Shadookie Sanders and his fraud of a pops. That team is straight bull junk.”
Utah -12.5 [4] vs. Arizona [2]: Cox Bigly is leaning on the QB matchup in picking the ‘Cats: “I like Fifita and I don’t think Rising plays. 12 points is a lot to me.”
Louisville +4.5 [3] at Notre Dame [3]: Rod Johnson says “Louisville is a little underrated and I think they’ll give ND some hell.” Lucky Day agrees: “Touchdown Jesus won’t stop the train that is coming from Louisville. They’re the second best team in the ACC this year.”
Florida State +5.5 [1] at SMU [1]: Cox Bigly likes the Ponies because “I personally think they outscore FSU. Don’t think the Seminoles can keep up.”
Northern Illinois +6.5 [2] at NC State [1]: “I think NC State is better off with the freshman QB,” says Harold Richard. “They’re at home and Doren’s teams usually get better throughout the season. Northern Illinois just had their bubble burst and the Wolfpack is due.”
Arkansas +3.5 [4] at Texas A&M [2]: C. Lanatus like the Hogs, “ I’m waiting for something to ‘click’ with Petrino. I think they will win outright.”
Oklahoma State +5.5 [3] at Kansas State [3]
Last Week and YTD
Lockpick, Jr. continued his heater, posting another 9-1 week to take the season lead. He’s calling his shot this week: “How do you improve on going 9-1, and then again 9-1? You put down your first perfect week. My picks are locks.” Cox Bigly tallied an uncharacteristic 3-7, dropping him to second place, while JML, Esquire quietly moved into a tie at second with a 8-2 week. And Lucky Day climbed above .500 on the season with an 8-2 record. Speaking of .500, the CFAJ Crew remains over .500 on the year as a whole, despite Harold Richards’ best effort to drag down the group with a 1-9 record last week. The standings year-to-date:
